The Man with the Moving Camera

I discovered this little gem, it is sort of a documentary but there is no cohesive story.

It shows random images of the daily life in Russian around the 1920's.

Watch it, it is visually engaging.

Top 13 Directors #01

ONE

Stanley Kubrick
Image

I hate to admit it, but my #1 is completely obvious and deservingly so.

Not only did he film all of his films in a gorgeous and professional style, his films were all top-notch.

And while most directors tend to do similar genres, most of Kubrick's films are completely different from one another and unique in their own way. He nailed it, and that is why he is my favorite director.

This legend will forever live on in his work.

TWO

Andrei Tarkovsky

His films are the closest thing to paintings coming to life in a natural way. I can't figure out how he makes them look so incredible.

Like my number three, I find his films to be hypnotizing, something about them just absorbs me. You have to see his work to understand.

I am grateful to have discovered him, what an inspiration.

THREE

Kar Wai Wong

I love his style of directing. His films tend to be rather slow, so his directing style is kind of like... almost hypnotic.
His style absorbs me into his films, and I love the use of different colors and directing styles in most of his films.

- Days of Being Wild (1990)
- Chungking Express (1994)

FOUR

David Lynch

The master of dreamy & surrealistic films. This guy is an inspiration, I love how well he interprets dreams and makes them reality.

I love his shorts, makes me wish I was a film director. He seems to be a rather strange guy.

Notable Work
- Eraserhead (1976)
Image
- The Elephant Man (1980)
- Dune (1984)
- Blue Velvet (1986)
- Wild at Heart (1990)

Top 13 Directors #05

FIVE

Alejandro Jodorowsky
Image

If this list was based purely on visuals, he would be my number one.

His films have some of the most unforgettable images, both good and bad.

But he doesn't have enough films, and at times it feels like he tries too hard to be disturbing. That prevents him from ranking higher.

But he definitely should be praised for inventing 'midnight movies'.

Notable Work
- Fando y Lis (1967)

- El Topo (1970)

- The Holy Mountain (1973)

- Santa Sangre (1990)

SEVEN

Quentin Tarantino

Definitely my 'guilty pleasure' director. Most of his movies are mindless action, but they hit the nail on entertainment.
His style of directing is not as crazy as most on this list, but it is still unique and looks great on the big screen.

Notable Work
- Reservoir Dogs (1992)
- Pulp Fiction (1994)
Image
- Jackie Brown (1997)
- Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003)

- Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Top 13 Directors #08

EIGHT

TIm Burton

I love Burton because he is so unique and rather silly compared to all these mostly 'serious' directors.
There is this sense of fun and craziness he puts in his movies that makes him appealing.

- Beetlejuice (1988)
- Batman (1989)
- Edward Scissorhands (1990)
